Gulch Dog Park

UBRAN / PUBLIC SPACE
The Gulch, Nashville, TN | 2019 | 0.40 acres

Nestled between Gulch parking and I-65, an unused strip of turf was converted into a dog park for the neighborhood. Separate sides for large and small dogs provides contained, leash-free play areas for dogs of all sizes in this urban setting where open space is hard to come by. A vibrant color scheme identifies the park on its hilltop from the retail below, and coordinating paint-work on a building at the street guide people and pups up the hill to their destination. By the vibrant park signage at the main entryway, a woven metal arched entryway creates a threshold for visitors coming into the space. From the south side of the parcel, visitors can enter the site from the sidewalk via custom wood timber steps and a turf mowed path edged with the same wood timbers. Boulders were placed throughout as seating for human guests that is also resilient to clambering paws. Each side of the dog park is equipped with water bowls and a spigot, as well as waste cans to keep the space clean. To engage the community in the project, the client held a competition to select artists to paint murals on wood panels along the rear fence, activating the space and serving as a backdrop for visitors and passersby. Open space between the large and small dog areas allow for comfortable and accessible circulation. In this same area, picnic tables take advantage of an existing concrete slab below some shade trees.
