Gulch Connector Path

URBAN / PUBLIC SPACE

Nashville, TN | 2019 start | 0.13 acres

As the Gulch in Nashville has developed over time, two centers have emerged, and to improve circulation between the two, a path is envisioned for a pocket of space between two high-rise buildings. This critical pathway would connect 11th Ave South to the up-and-coming area containing Patagonia, Pegleg Porker, and several new residential towers, retail, and restaurants. On one side of the roughly 15’ wide space is a parking garage; the opposite side is characterized by a combination of natural rock face and cut boulders that create a nearly 34’ wall. In the crevices and pockets created by intersecting stones, native and non-native plant species have found their niche, creating a living wall in this urban crevasse. Designs for this space consider a combination of long staircases, ramps, and stairwells to elevated walkways that connect to a rear access point and to a midpoint at Patagonia, Superica, and a future park space above. Precedent studies identify options to maximize visibility in this enclosed alleyway and ideas for keeping the project low cost and structurally sound. Living wall projects, tactical urbanism, and creative lighting solutions inspire ways to draw people in, activate the space, and keep it safe.
